SPIRIT OF SATURN

By dry distillation of the Saturn salt (Saturn sugar) or lead acetate obtains the spirit of Saturn.

In 2-litre cucurbit with plane bottom, pour 500g of Saturn salt. Place the cucurbit on electric oven with ceramic plate or in a stainless steel bowl on a gas stove in sand bath. Put the chapiter on cucurbit and connect to its beak a 2-litre spherical recipient with air hole. Apply silicon in all the joints.

Heat up until that the salt begins to melt with ebullition. To wind on the lap of the cucurbit a piece of fine aluminium leaf to cover it completely, for like this, to facilitate the distillation of the spirit.

As soon as the salt begins to melt, it will begin distil the phlegm from salt crystalization water. When the effervescence ceases, the mass inside of the cucurbit it will become spongy, increasing its volume about three times. Therefore, you should not pour more than 500g of matter in a 2-litre cucurbit.

When the mass becomes spongy of grey colour, increase a little more the temperature so that it begins distils the spirit, what will recognize for the fragrance exhaled from recipient air hole.

At this time, place a wet cloth with cold water on the chapiter and throat to facilitate the distillation of the volatile spirit, always tends the caution the humidify the cloth with very cold water as this heats up. You will see inside of the chapiter threads similar to the distillation of the spirit of wine.

Continue the distillation until you that don't see more threads inside of the chapiter. Then, stop and let to cool.

When the cucurbit is lukewarm, with a torsion movement, remove of the chapiter. If you let to cool completely the alembic, you won't get to remove the chapiter and you will have to send the liquid for the beak, and distil at moderate temperature and so to unglue the chapiter.

With a long handle wood spoon, remove the caput with caution for not to break the cucurbit. Keep the caput for extract the metallic lead, on a gas stove, melting it with tartar salt in a stainless steel container.

You will have distilled about 100 ml of phlegm and spirit together. Wash well the cucurbit with a concentrated solution of caustic soda and water. Also wash very well the inner of the chapiter with water and detergent, so that they don't remain any residues of acetate.

After everything very well clean, pour in cucurbit the distilled that contains both, phlegm and spirit. Place the chapiter and the recipient, tends the caution to apply silicon in all the joints. Place, also, a wet cloth in very cold water on top of the head of the chapiter, to facilitate the distillation of the volatile spirit.

Apply a moderate heat that doesn't surpass the 50 or 60 degrees. Will begin to distil the spirit, what will recognize for the threads that you will see inside of the chapiter and for the fragrance exhaled by the recipient air hole.

Distil like this, moderately, until you don't see more threads inside the chapiter. Then, stop and turn off the oven.

Remove the phlegm that remains in the cucurbit and reject it. Wash the alembic again as previously.

Pour the spirit in the cucurbit (about 50ml) and distil as before, but only 30ml. Stop and remove the spirit from recipient that you will keep in a very closed dark flask to the shelter of the light.

The spirit of Saturn is still an acetone impure that has different characteristics of the spagyrical point of view, of the vulgar acetone. It is very aromatic, volatile and inflammable, what easily you can prove it.

This spirit was very appreciated by it's healing virtues by the spagyrical ancient doctors and mainly Becker. He, did get to affirm in his book, that the spirit of Saturn would be the famous "mercury spirit" of the philosophers. So much as we know this it doesn't correspond to the truth.

Von Bernus, in your book "Medicine et Alchimie", p151 and 152, also refers its virtues.

As it is known, Saturn is a very toxic metal and, for that, to extract the spirit of the sugar of Saturn, will have be taken all the precautions so that it not be polluted of particles of this salt (acetate) that is toxic also.
